Parents -

Below are some resources for our children in children’s ministry. Please note that our Preschool - 3rd grade children are hearing the same story so that portion of the resources for the Sunday will be the same. The response options are different and have been created to be age appropriate. However, if you choose to reenact the story, you can have all ages participate. If you have multiple children in your family the Godly Play option for the K/1 grade room is a good option to adapt to all family members.

For Our Younger Preschool children:

  1. Pray with your toddler. It can be something simple like - God, thank you for loving us. We are so glad that you sent Jesus to us as a baby.

  2. Sing Jesus Loves Me.

  3. Watch the video above with today’s story.

  4. Jesus came to us as a baby. This is a great gift from God. Color a gift.

For Our Older Preschool Room children:

  1. Have your child say a prayer before they begin. If they struggle, it can be something simple like: Thank you God for today. Thank you for all the people in the Bible. Thanks for all of your promises that you keep!

  2. Remind the children that the story they are about to watch is from the Bible.

  3. Watch the video above of our Godly Play story. We have heard this story a few times now, so I am asking the kids to help tell the story and to remember all the important people in it!

  4. Wonder - Answer the wondering questions on the video.

  5. Respond - The story goes into detail about gifts that Jesus received. Have your child make a gift for someone. It could be as simple as coloring or drawing a picture.

  6. Sing We Three Kings.

For Our Kindergarten and 1st Grade children:

  1. Have your child say a prayer before they begin. If they struggle, it can be something simple like: Thank you God for today. We thank you for the promises that you made to the People of God and to us.

  2. Remind the children that the story they are about to watch is from the Bible.

  3. Watch the video above.

For Our 2nd and 3rd grade children:

  1. Have your child say a prayer before they begin. If they struggle, it can be something simple like: Thank you God for today. Thank you for sending us your Son, Jesus. Please help us make others aware of Jesus’ love for them and how He gave to save us from our sins.

  2. Remind the children that the story they are about to watch is from the Bible.

  3. Watch the video above. Our 2nd and 3rd graders have heard this story a few times. I would encourage them to tell the story on their own. They can pause the video after each card appears and explain what each one means. I provide some clues in the video.

  4. Wonder about the questions in the video.

  5. Response- What is the greatest gift you have ever gotten? Write about it. Why was it important? How was it special? How does this gift compare to Jesus?

For Our 4th and 5th Graders:

  1. Have your child pray.

  2. Today we are talking about baptism. If your child is interested in getting baptized or has questions about baptism, please let me know.

  3. Read these verses that explain why people get baptized:

    1. To follow Jesus’ example (Matthew 3:13-17)

    2. To obey God (Matthew 28:19)

    3. In the New Testament everyone who accepted Jesus was baptized (Acts 2:38-41; chapters 8, 9, 10, 16)

    4. To live a new life with God (Romans 6:3-5)

    5. To cloth ourselves with Christ (Galatians 3:26-27)

    6. To respond to God (I Peter 3:21)

  4. People get baptized to remind people of Jesus’s death and resurrection.Read Colossians 2:12. When you are lowered under the water, it’s a symbol that reminds people that Jesus died for us and our sins are buried. When you are lifted up out of the water, it reminds people that Jesus rose from the dead on the third day.

  5. It also is a symbol of new life in Christ. Read Romans 6:4. Your baptism is a part of what it means to be a Christian. You are baptized because you want to give your life to Jesus and, because of that, you follow Jesus’ example in baptism. Baptism is the ceremony that we enter into that allows us to join with Jesus in his death and resurrection.  In baptism, we are buried with Jesus in the water and then raised to new life with him when we come out of the water.

  6. This is also the place where we are brought into the family of the church.  Baptism is one of the symbols that hold us together with Jesus and the other people within the church. Journal the answers to these questions:

a.      What does following Jesus mean to you?

b.      What Scripture stories or verses have been important to you? Why?

c.      What question(s) do you have about baptism?

I want to highlight some resources for you to talk to your children about race, racism and diversity.
