Parents -

Below are some resources for our children in children’s ministry. Please note that our Older Preschoolers - 3rd grade children are hearing the same story so that portion of the resources for the Sunday will be the same. The response options are different and have been created to be age appropriate. However, if you choose to reenact the story, you can have all ages participate. If you have multiple children in your family the Godly Play option for the K/1 grade room is a good option to adapt to all family members.

For Our Younger Preschool children:

  1. Pray with your toddler. It can be something simple like - God, thank you for my family. Thank you for Jesus. We are so glad that he grew up into a man and did so many great things!

  2. Sing - we will be talking about how Jesus is the Good Shepherd for most of the month. Here is a song for the kids to listen to. They can start learning the chorus.

  3. Watch the video above with today’s story.

  4. Jesus is our Good Shepherd. Create some sheep by gluing cotton balls onto a piece of copy paper. Mom’s and dad’s can help draw legs and a head if necessary.

For Our Older Preschool Room children:

  1. Have your child say a prayer before they begin. If they struggle, it can be something simple like: God, thank you for my family. Thank you for Jesus. We are so glad that he grew up into a man and did so many great things!

  2. Remind the children that the story they are about to watch is from the Bible.

  3. Watch the video above of our Godly Play story.

  4. Wonder - There are a lot of things to wonder about this story. It is deep. I would encourage you to just go over the ones in the video. The children will continue to hear this story when they get older in our children’s classes and will begin to put the pieces together. You can read Matthew 13:18-23 if you would like to further explain what this parable means.

  5. Respond - Plant some flower seeds or grass seeds in some good soil. Put them in a cup or in a pot. Water them. Make sure they get good light. What happens to the seeds? How is what happens to them similar to the story?

  6. Listen to this song about Jesus being the Good Shepherd. We have talked about Jesus being the good shepherd and will be sharing stories about Jesus for the next quarter or so.

For Our Kindergarten and 1st Grade children:

  1. Have your child say a prayer before they begin. If they struggle, it can be something simple like: Thank you God for Jesus. We are grateful he came to us as a baby and grew up to do many great and wonderful things. Amen.

  2. Remind the children that the story they are about to watch is from the Bible.

  3. Watch the video above of our Godly Play story.

  4. Wonder - Answer the wondering questions in the video. Here are some additional ones if your kids are really into it.

    1. I wonder what surprised the sower the most?

    2. I wonder what the sower used for seed

    3. I wonder what the person was doing when the little seeds could not get their roots in the stones?

    4. I wonder what the person was doing when the little seeds were choked by the thorns?

    5. I wonder what the person was doing when the little seeds were growing in the good earth.

  5. After wondering, read Matthew 13:18-23. Jesus tells us what he meant with this particular parable. Parables are sometimes tricky to understand but when we uncover the meaning, it helps the parable stick with us.

  6. Respond - Plant some flower seeds or grass seeds in some good soil. Put them in a cup or in a pot. Water them. Make sure they get good light. What happens to the seeds? How is what happens to them similar to the story?

  7. Sing Shepherd. We will be talking about Jesus all this month, including how He is the Good Shepherd.

For Our 2nd and 3rd grade children:

  1. Have your child say a prayer before they begin.

  2. Remind the children that the story they are about to watch is from the Bible.

  3. Watch the video above.

  4. Wonder - Answer the wondering questions in the video. Here are some additional ones if your kids are really into it.

  7. Sing Shepherd. We will be talking about Jesus all this month, including how He is the Good Shepherd.

For Our 4th and 5th Graders:

  1. Have your child pray.

  2. Since mid September, we have been following what the adults and youth were learning more. We are going to hop back into the Old Testament until we get close to Easter. Today we are going to learn about Daniel.

  3. Read Daniel 6:1-9. Daniel was living in exile. It is important to remember that he was not living in home country.

  4. Read Daniel 6:10-18.

  5. Journal about the following: What Daniel always done? Did he continue to do it even though he might die? What gave him courage?

  6. Read Daniel 6:19-28.

  7. Journal the following: what happened when the king arrived? What did Daniel say? Could things have gone differently? What if Daniel didn’t pray? Worship? Fast?

  8. Fasting is one of the spiritual disciplines we are learning. You may hear about fasting during Lent. It is common practice for people to give up things during Lent (which will start on February 17 this year). Fasting is giving something up so we can make space for something that brings us close to God.

  9. Pick one thing to give up. Some examples are video games, junk food or sweets, phone or IPad. Give them up for a week and take the time you would spend on those things or with things to think about God. During this time, you can memorize a verse, pray or do an act of service instead.

I want to highlight some resources for you to talk to your children about race, racism and diversity.
