MARCH 15 - CGKIDS

Parents -

Below are some resources for our children in children’s ministry. Please note that our Preschool - 3rd grade children are hearing the same story so that portion of the resources for the Sunday will be the same. The response options are different and have been created to be age appropriate. However, if you choose to reenact the story, you can have all ages participate.

If you have multiple children in your family the Godly Play option for the K/1 grade room is a good option to adapt to all family members.

For Our Toddler children on March 15:

  1. Pray for your toddler. It can be something simple like - God we thank you for today. Thank you for all you teach us through your Bible and the stories that are in it. Amen.

  2. Sing This is the Day

  3. Watch the above video with today’s story.

  4. Ask your child - have you ever been scared? I wonder how the disciples felt in the storm and how they felt when Jesus made the storm stop?

  5. Have your child color this coloring page.

For Our Preschool Room children on March 15:

  1. Have your child say a prayer before they begin. If they struggle, it can be something simple like: Thank you God for today. We thank you for your Word and your Son. We pray that we learn something new about you today. Amen.

  2. Remind the children that the story they are about to watch is from the Bible.

  3. Watch the video of our Godly Play story. The video will lead the children through some wondering.

  4. Respond to the story - we were planning on doing water colors in class. As the video mentions, water is very important in the Bible. If you have water colors at home, have your child paint a picture of Jesus in the water getting baptized or have them paint the water with a dove up above. Playdough is also a good option. Have your child use playdough to create waves. If you are feeling adventurous, find a shoe sized tupperware container or a large bowl and fill it with water. Find two action figures or Little People and have one be Jesus and one be John. You could even make a dove out of paper. Have your child recreate the story they just heard. If you have older children, they can help recreate with supplies you have around the house.

  5. This story provides a good time for you to talk about baptism with your preschooler. Share that baptism is a way of showing others that you are committed to following Jesus. People get baptized like Jesus did - some even get baptized outside in a body of water just like Jesus. Some get baptized inside like we have done at CGNE! Share with your child your baptism story.

For Our Kindergarten and 1st Grade children on March 15:

Have your child use playdough to create waves. If you are feeling adventurous, find a shoe sized tupperware container or a large bowl and fill it with water. Use toys around the house like action figures, smaller dolls or Little People to represent John and Jesus. Have your child tell the story in their own words acting it out with the toys. You can make this a family activity!

  5. This story provides a good time for you to talk about baptism. Share that baptism is a way of showing others that you are committed to following Jesus. 6. Practice singing Glorious Day to sing during Palm Sunday service.

For Our 2nd and 3rd grade children on March 15:

  1. Have your child say a prayer before they begin. If they struggle, it can be something simple like: Thank you God for today. We thank you for your Word and your Son. We pray that we learn something new about you today. Amen. They can also pray for their friends, teachers and family!

  2. Watch the video of our Godly Play story. The video will lead the children through some wondering.

  3. Respond to the story - we were planning on doing water colors in class. As the video mentions, water is very important in the Bible. If you have water colors at home, have your child paint a picture of Jesus in the water getting baptized or have them paint the water with a dove up above. Have the children journal their thoughts by answering one of the following set of questions:

    1. Did John feel that he was worthy of baptizing Jesus? I wonder why or why not? How would you have reacted?

    2. What was God’s reaction to John baptizing Jesus? I wonder why He sent a dove?

  4. This story provides a good time for you to talk about baptism. Share that baptism is a way of showing others that you are committed to following Jesus. People get baptized like Jesus did - some even get baptized outside in a body of water just like Jesus. Some get baptized inside like we have done at CGNE! Share with your child your baptism story.

  5. Have your child find the story of Jesus’ baptism in their Bible. (Matthew 3:13-16, Mark 1:9-13, Luke 3:21-22, John 1:32 - the accounts in Matthew and Mark are a little more detailed like the story). Have them read the story.

  6. Practice singing Glorious Day to sing during Palm Sunday service.

For Our 4th and 5th Graders on March 15:

  1. Have your child say a prayer before they start.

  2. Read Luke 6:43-45.

  3. Have your child draw an apple tree like the illustration. Discuss how our apple tree will own make apples and it will only do so if the roots of the tree have water. We don’t water the apples. We make sure to water the roots. If the roots are healthy, the tree will be too and therefore it will produce fruit. We can use this illustration for ourselves. Our hearts are much like tree roots and the source of our spirit. If we don’t take care of spirit, we won’t produce fruit. We can take care of our spirit/hearts by doing the spiritual disciplines we have been discussing in class. Have your child share with you what those are.

  4. Have your child read Galatians 5:22-23. Think about the following: What fruits are listed? Which ones do have?

  5. Practice singing Glorious Day to sing during Palm Sunday service.
