Parents -
Below are some resources for our children in children’s ministry. Please note that our Preschool - 3rd grade children are hearing the same story so that portion of the resources for the Sunday will be the same. The response options are different and have been created to be age appropriate. However, if you choose to reenact the story, you can have all ages participate. If you have multiple children in your family the Godly Play option for the K/1 grade room is a good option to adapt to all family members.
For Our Younger Preschool children:
Pray with your toddler. It can be something simple like - God, thank you for loving us. Thank you for all of your promises that you made and that you keep. Thank you for Jesus. Amen.
Sing Happy Birthday to Jesus Our King. This song is sung to the tune of Happy Birthday. Here are the lyrics:
Happy Birthday we sing, to Jesus our King.
Whose birthday is Christmas.
Hear the happy bells ring.
Watch the video above with today’s story.
Jesus is our King! Create a crown using this template.
For Our Older Preschool Room children:
Have your child say a prayer before they begin. If they struggle, it can be something simple like: Thank you God for today. Thank you for all the people in the Bible. Thanks for all of your promises that you keep!
Remind the children that the story they are about to watch is from the Bible.
Watch the video above of our Godly Play story.
Wonder - Answer the wondering questions on the video.
Respond - Color the wreath and color one candle purple. You can pick which one. Save your paper for next week. We will color a candle each week.
For Our Kindergarten and 1st Grade children:
Have your child say a prayer before they begin. If they struggle, it can be something simple like: Thank you God for today. We thank you for the promises that you made to the People of God and to us.
Remind the children that the story they are about to watch is from the Bible.

For Our 2nd and 3rd grade children:
Have your child say a prayer before they begin. If they struggle, it can be something simple like: Thank you God for today. Thank you for sending us your Son, Jesus. Please help us make others aware of Jesus’ love for them and how He gave to save us from our sins.
Remind the children that the story they are about to watch is from the Bible.
Watch the video above.
Wonder about the questions in the video.
Response- Make an Advent Wreath out of the hands of your family members. Here is an idea of how to start. You don’t have to fill the wreath in all the way and can make it a circle with a hole in the middle. If you don’t have green construction paper, you could use white paper and color the hands green. Make a candle for each Sunday. You’ll need three purple candles, a pink candle and white candle. Make the white one a little bit bigger since it represents Jesus!
If you have the Advent Guide, we talked about prophets today as well. Read Isaiah 9:1-7. I encourage you to complete the Advent Guide with your family. Even if you don’t have the wreath or the candles. The verses and activities will help prepare you for Advent.
Think of a Christmas Carol or Christmas song. Is there one that you know that reminds you of today? Sing it or have your parents play it on their phone for you.
For Our 4th and 5th Graders:
Have your child pray.
We have been spending some time in the Old Testament. Now that we are in Advent, we will be moving into the New Testament. Today, we will be in Luke. Read Luke 1:24-15.
Journal your thoughts on the following: Who took Elizabeth’s shame away? Why do you think Elizabeth stayed in seclusion for five months?
Read Luke 1:41-45.
Journal about the following: why do you think Elizabeth cried out in a loud voice? How is Elizabeth worshiping God?
Worship often begins with being thankful. We are in the holiday season of sharing thanks. Think about the following: what does it mean to be thankful? Where can we be thankful? Who can express thanksgiving? Take some time and listen to your favorite worship music for 10 minutes. Write down everything you are thankful for!
Think of a Christmas Carol or Christmas song. Is there one that you know that reminds you of today? Sing it or have your parents play it on their phone for you.
I want to highlight some resources for you to talk to your children about race, racism and diversity.
This book comes in a kid version and then also has a parent companion book if you are interested.
